Universal Life Insurance in DeSoto
Universal life is permanent coverage where you decide how much goes in and when. Adjustable payments only work in your favor if you can see the monthly charges coming out. We put the cost of insurance, fees and lapse risk in writing before you apply, so the policy matches what you expected.
How Universal Life Works and Who It Suits
Universal life is lifelong coverage with two parts: a death benefit paid to your beneficiary and an account where cash value builds. Your premium goes into that account. Each month the insurer takes out the cost of insurance, an administrative fee and any rider charges, then credits interest on what remains. The coverage lasts as long as the account can pay those monthly deductions.
It fits when you need protection beyond a 20- or 30-year term and want more freedom over payments than whole life gives. DeSoto clients often consider it for estate costs, buying out a business partner, or supporting a spouse well after the children have left home.
The drawback is that the cost of insurance climbs with age. If you pay only the minimum, the cash value may look fine through your fifties and sixties and then empty fast in your seventies. That is the reason we spell out the charges in writing before anything else.
What You Get When We Handle Universal Life
- Goals and timing before price
- We settle what bills the coverage has to pay and how long it has to last before quoting a price. Those answers set the face amount and tell us which type of universal life fits.
- Matching the policy type to the goal
- Guaranteed universal life holds the death benefit to a chosen age through a secondary guarantee and builds only a small cash value. Current-assumption and indexed versions grow more cash value but rely on credited rates. We tell you which fits your goal and the reason.
- Your illustration explained in writing
- Each illustration shows two projections: one using the insurer's guaranteed rates and charges, and one using current assumptions. We walk through both, including the year coverage would end if credited interest fell to the guaranteed minimum.
- Picking a death benefit option
- With Option A, the death benefit stays flat while cash value grows within it. With Option B, cash value is added on top of the face amount, and the monthly charges go up. We show what each costs.
- Beneficiaries and riders
- We help you list primary and contingent beneficiaries and review riders like waiver of monthly deduction or chronic illness access. Every rider appears with its own charge, and nothing extra gets slipped in.
When Universal Life Starts to Make Sense
Term coverage is close to expiring
Your need may run longer than the term, and the conversion price into whole life may be more than you want to carry. In that case a guaranteed universal life policy can bridge the difference.
Your income changes year to year
Business owners and commission earners can put extra money in during a good year and scale back when cash is tight, provided the account still covers the monthly deductions.
You need coverage for a fixed obligation
Estate taxes, a buy-sell agreement or a dependent with lifelong needs usually call for coverage that does not expire.
An older policy has started to sag
Many universal life policies sold when interest rates were higher now credit less than projected. If your annual statement shows the cash value dropping, it is time for a review.
How We Set Up Your Policy
- 1
Phone conversation about your goals
We ask about your age, health, income and what the coverage has to accomplish. If you already own a universal life policy, we read the current statement first.
- 2
Written quote and illustration
You receive the premium, face amount, product type and every charge in writing. We point out the surrender charge schedule so you know what leaving early would cost.
- 3
Application and underwriting
Most applications involve a health questionnaire, a prescription history check and often a paramedical exam. Underwriting places you in a health class, which sets your cost of insurance rates.
- 4
Checking the issued contract
Once the insurer issues the contract, we line it up against the illustration you signed off on. If underwriting assigned a different health class, you see the revised numbers before you accept.

What Moves the Cost of Universal Life
Universal life pricing comes from the monthly deductions, not just the premium on the first page. Two people paying the same premium can have very different policies. These are the factors that change the numbers most.
- Age and health class
- Cost of insurance rates are set by your age and the underwriting class you qualify for. Tobacco use and conditions like diabetes or heart disease move you to a higher class.
- Face amount and death benefit option
- A larger death benefit means larger monthly charges. Choosing Option B raises the net amount at risk and the cost along with it.
- Product type
- Guaranteed universal life usually costs less for lifetime coverage because it builds little cash value. Indexed and current-assumption policies cost more to fund but can accumulate value.
- How long the guarantee runs
- Guaranteeing coverage only to age 90 takes a smaller premium than guaranteeing it to age 121. We quote both ages side by side so you choose on purpose.
- Riders
- Each rider adds its own monthly deduction. We list them separately so you can drop what you do not need.
Common Universal Life Questions
Something not covered here? (972) 928-1026
What sets universal life apart from whole life?
With whole life, the premium never changes and the contract lists your cash value for every year. Universal life lets you pay more or less, and sometimes change the death benefit, but the cash value rises or falls with credited interest and monthly charges. That freedom costs you some certainty. Our Whole Life Insurance page explains the other choice.
Could my universal life coverage lapse?
It can, when the cash value runs short of the monthly deductions and there is no secondary guarantee. The usual cause is a policy funded too thinly while the cost of insurance grows with age. We show the funding needed to keep your coverage active using guaranteed assumptions.
Am I able to take a loan from my cash value?
Once cash value has built up, most universal life policies permit loans and partial withdrawals. Interest builds on loans, and any unpaid balance lowers the death benefit. Pulling out too much can make the policy lapse, so we go over the limits before you do it.
What if I miss a premium?
Monthly deductions keep coming out of the cash value. With enough in the account, the coverage stays in place. On a guaranteed policy, however, a skipped or late payment can weaken the no-lapse guarantee, so call us before you skip one.
Is it time to swap out my older universal life policy?
Not necessarily. A new policy starts surrender charges and underwriting over, and your health may not be what it was. We set an in-force illustration of the policy you have next to a fresh quote and tell you straight which way makes sense.
